SASSA FAQs: Short Answers to Common Questions

Short, direct answers to the SASSA and SRD grant questions people type into a search bar — each one checked against an official source and linked to the full guide when there is more to know. Nothing here costs money, and nothing here needs your ID number.

Payments and dates

When is the SRD grant paid?

In batches in the second half of each month. There is no fixed payday: your own date appears beside your approved month on the SRD portal once your payment has been placed in a batch. This year's SRD pay runs.

My SRD status says pending. How long will it take?

Until that month's checks against Home Affairs, SARS, UIF, NSFAS and bank records finish. There is no fixed time, and reapplying does not speed it up — it can create a duplicate. Why a month stays pending.

When are permanent grants paid?

In the first week of each month, in a fixed order: Older Persons first, then Disability and Care Dependency, then the children's grants and Grant-in-Aid. Find your next payment date.

My status shows a payment date but there is no money. What now?

Funds usually reflect within 3 working days of the date shown, depending on your bank. Ask your bank first whether a deposit is pending, then report the missed payment for that month to SASSA on 0800 60 10 11. What releases a payment, and when to act.

Do I have to withdraw my grant on payment day?

No. Money that is not withdrawn stays in the account. But an approved grant that is never collected for 90 days lapses. Suspension and lapsing explained.

Bank accounts and phone numbers

Can SASSA pay my grant into someone else's bank account?

No. The account must be active and in your own name. A spouse's, parent's or friend's account is rejected. Adding or changing SRD banking details.

I lost my SIM card. How do I get my OTP?

One-time PINs go only to the phone number SASSA holds for you, so update that number first on the SRD portal. If the update fails because the old SIM is gone, a SASSA office can verify you in person. Changing your SRD phone number.

Can I change my banking details on WhatsApp?

No. Banking details are changed only on the official portal, with an OTP. Any WhatsApp number, SMS or website offering to change them is a scam.

Fraud and your ID

Someone applied for a grant using my ID number. What do I do?

Report it to SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 and register your ID with the Southern African Fraud Prevention Service (SAFPS) on 0860 101 248. Appeal any month declined on your own application because of it. What to do if your details were misused.

Does SASSA ever charge a fee or ask for my PIN?

Never. Applying, checking a status, updating details and appealing are free on every official channel, and SASSA never asks for a bank PIN, a banking login or the OTP it has just sent you. The only official SASSA channels.

Is a website that checks my SRD status for me safe?

Only srd.sassa.gov.za and SASSA's own WhatsApp, SMS and phone lines are official. A site that asks for your ID number either passes it on or keeps it. How to spot a fake status site.

Collecting and eligibility

Can someone else collect my grant for me?

Yes, through a procurator you appoint yourself, or an administrator appointed by SASSA when you can no longer decide for yourself. Each needs its own documents. Procurators and administrators compared.

What counts as income for the SRD means test?

Money of R624 or more reaching a bank account linked to your ID in a month can decline that month — including informal work and regular transfers from family. What counts, and what does not.

Can I get SRD if I already receive another grant?

Not if the other grant is paid in your own name. A Child Support grant is paid for the child, so receiving it as a caregiver does not stop SRD. Check whether you qualify.

Can asylum seekers and permit holders apply for SRD?

Yes. Recognised refugees and holders of certain special permits can apply; the portal has a separate applicant category for asylum seekers and special permit holders. How to apply.

Which questions have a page of their own?

Some answers need more than a paragraph. These have a full page:

A full guide like SRD eligibility and the means test is written to be read start to finish. An answer here is written for someone who already knows what they are looking for. Both use the same verified facts.

Answers are checked the same way as every guide on this site — see how we verify. Sources: SASSA, the SRD portal at srd.sassa.gov.za, and SAFPS. Last verified August 2026.
