SASSA Offices by Province: Where to Go and What to Bring

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) runs one provincial office in each of the nine provinces. Pick your province below to find it, then call the toll-free line on 0800 60 10 11 to get the address and hours of your nearest local office. You only need an office for permanent grants, verification you cannot do online, or a problem the toll-free line could not solve. Social Relief of Distress (SRD) applications and appeals are done on the portal, not at an office.

Which SASSA office is in my province?

SASSA provincial offices. These are regional offices, not every local service office.

A provincial office manages the grants for the whole province. The place you actually visit is usually a local service office or a pay point near you, so use the next section to find it before you travel.

How do I find my nearest local SASSA office?

  1. Call the toll-free line. 0800 60 10 11 (Monday to Friday, 08:00–16:00). Say your town and ask for the nearest local office, its address and its opening hours.
  2. Check SASSA's own contact page. The SASSA Services portal has a contact section, and the South African Government contact directory lists SASSA offices.
  3. Ask what to bring. The documents depend on the grant, so confirm before you travel. The usual list is in documents and qualifying criteria.

Use only these official sources. SASSA does not charge to apply or to help you, and a social media page offering an "office number" or "agent" is not official. See the only official SASSA channels.

What should I bring to a SASSA office?

  • Your ID (smart card or green barcoded ID book), and the beneficiary's ID if you are there for someone else.
  • The documents for your grant. They differ for child support, older persons and disability, so check the documents list.
  • Proof of the problem, such as the date and reference number from an earlier call or a screenshot of the message you received.
  • A working phone that receives SMS, in case SASSA sends a one-time PIN.

Never hand over your bank PIN or an OTP, in an office or anywhere else. SASSA does not ask for them.

What can a SASSA office do, and what can it not do?

  • Can help with: permanent-grant applications, verification you cannot complete online, life certification and reviews, and logging a problem the toll-free line could not resolve.
  • Cannot do: SRD applications, SRD appeals, or changing SRD banking details and phone numbers. Staff will send you to the portal. Banking details and phone number changes are made online.

For help choosing between the portal, the toll-free line and an office, see when to go to a SASSA office.

Common questions

Do I need to go to a SASSA office for the SRD grant?

No. SRD applications, status checks, appeals, banking changes and phone-number changes are done on the official portal. Offices direct you to the portal for these.

Is the provincial office the same as my local office?

No. The provincial office is the regional head office for the province. Most people use a local service office or a pay point. Call 0800 60 10 11 to find the one closest to you.

Why is there no address for Gauteng or North West?

The addresses published by SASSA and by the government directory do not match for those two provinces. We would rather send you to the toll-free line for the current address than print one that may be wrong.

Should I phone before I go?

Yes. Call 0800 60 10 11 (Monday to Friday, 08:00–16:00) to confirm the address, the opening hours and the documents you need, so the trip is not wasted.

Does SASSA charge a fee at its offices?

No. Applying for a grant and getting help are free. Anyone asking for payment to "speed up" a grant is not acting for SASSA.

Can someone else go to the office for me?

Only through an official arrangement such as a procurator or an administrator. See collecting a grant for someone else.
