You have 90 days from a decline to lodge a request for reconsideration on SASSA's official appeals page, under the Social Assistance Act 13 of 2004. Each declined month is appealed separately, it is free, and a successful appeal pays only that month. SASSA's reconsideration can take up to 90 working days; if refused, the final step is the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals.
Opens the official appeals portal. Appealing is free, and only this page handles SRD appeals.
Not by phone, WhatsApp or at an office
Appeals cannot be lodged through the toll-free line, WhatsApp, USSD or a SASSA office. Anyone offering to "submit your appeal" for a fee is a scammer.
90 days from the decline. Some websites say 30 days; that figure is wrong. A month not appealed within the window keeps its decline and cannot be paid later, so appeal as soon as the status appears.
If an appeal is successful, the month is paid on the next scheduled batch. Months after it are assessed as normal.
Not SASSA. Appeals are decided by the Department of Social Development, which is why the appeal leaves the SASSA domain:
| Grant | Where it goes |
|---|---|
| SRD grant | https://srd.dsd.gov.za |
| Permanent grants | Email [email protected], or ask a SASSA official to lodge it for you — see appealing a grant decision |
You may also request assistance from a SASSA official to lodge an appeal rather than doing it alone.
On the official appeals portal, using the same ID and phone number. Phone agents cannot see appeal progress. If the result is not what you expected after more than 30 days, call 0800 60 10 11 and ask specifically about that month's review.
You can lodge an appeal for any reason, but it only succeeds if the reason is wrong for that month. A correct decline — real income, real UIF, a real second grant — stays declined.
Yes. Each declined month needs its own appeal, lodged within 90 days of that month's decline.
That month cannot be reopened. Fix the cause so future months are approved, and appeal any newer declines in time.
No. Later months are checked as normal while the appeal is reviewed.
