How to Appeal a Declined SRD Month & Check Appeal Status

What should I check before appealing?

• Is the reason wrong for that month? If you genuinely had income above R624, received UIF, or held another grant that month, the decline is correct and an appeal will not change it. Fix the cause instead — see every decline reason and its fix.
• Are your details correct? Name, ID and date of birth must match your ID document exactly, and the phone number must be the one on your application.
• Appealing is not reapplying. A new application does not challenge a declined month. Only an appeal does.

How do I lodge the appeal?

1. Confirm the month shows Declined on the official status page.
2. Open the official appeals page: https://srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals/appeal. It is the only place SRD appeals are lodged.
3. Enter your 13-digit ID number and registered phone number.
4. Select the declined month and the reason shown. One appeal per month.
5. Review your contact details so the outcome reaches you.
6. Read and accept the declaration and consent.
7. Submit, and keep the confirmation.

How long do I have?

90 days from the decline. Some websites say 30 days; that figure is wrong. A month not appealed within the window keeps its decline and cannot be paid later, so appeal as soon as the status appears.

How long does a decision take?

SASSA reconsideration

Up to 90 working days.

Independent Tribunal (ITSAA)

If SASSA refuses, the case goes to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals, the final administrative step. Reviews typically take 60 to 90 days.

If an appeal is successful, the month is paid on the next scheduled batch. Months after it are assessed as normal.

Who actually decides an appeal?

Not SASSA. Appeals are decided by the Department of Social Development, which is why the appeal leaves the SASSA domain:

How do I check the appeal outcome?

Check your appeal on the official appeals portal, The portal shows the latest status or outcome for the appealed month. If the appeal for a specific month has been Pending for more than 30 days, call the SASSA toll-free number 0800 60 10 11 and ask specifically about that month's review.

The appeals page lists every month of your application. Open the month you appealed to see three things: the decline reason SASSA gave, the appeal reason you chose, and the appeal outcome. Pending means the appeal has not been decided yet; it changes to an outcome once the review is finished.
