SRD Status Pending: What Is Happening and How Long It Takes
Pending means SASSA has received your application for that month but has not finished checking it against Home Affairs, SARS, UIF, NSFAS and your bank. It is not a decline. First-time applications can stay pending for 30 to 90 days while SASSA builds your verification profile; there is nothing to do but wait, and reapplying makes it worse, not faster.
What is SASSA checking while my status is pending?

How long does pending last?
- First-time or reactivated application
- Commonly 30 to 90 days, because every database is being matched for the first time.
- An existing application, one month pending
- Usually shorter — a single check, often a bank or identity match, is still running.
- Longer than 90 days with no change
- Outside the normal range. Call 0800 60 10 11 (Monday to Friday, 08:00–16:00), quote the specific month, and ask what is outstanding.
What should I do, and not do, while pending?
Do
- Complete any SMS verification link SASSA sends — it is often the thing being waited for
- Make sure your banking details on the portal are correct and the account is active in your own name
- Check the status again after a week or two using the same ID and phone number
Do not
- Submit a new application — it can create a duplicate and reset the checks
- Pay anyone who says they can "release" a pending month; no one can
- Share your ID number, PIN or SMS codes with any site or number other than SASSA's
What happens after pending?
When the month's checks finish, the status becomes one of three things: Approved (a payment date follows once a batch is scheduled), Declined with a reason you can read and, if wrong, appeal, or Referred for an extra identity or fraud check — see what a referred status means.
Common questions
Does pending mean my application was declined?
No. Pending means no decision yet. A decline would show as Declined with a reason.
Why is my status still pending after several weeks?
Usually one database match is outstanding — most often identity with Home Affairs or bank verification. If a verification SMS arrived, completing it is the fastest fix.
Can I make pending resolve faster?
Not directly. You cannot trigger SASSA's checks. You can only make sure nothing on your side is holding them: a completed verification link and correct banking details.
I changed my banking details and now the month is pending. Is that normal?
Yes. A banking change is verified with the bank before the month can be finalised, which can take up to 7 working days.
